It gets personal
How to respond to a passive-aggressive comment at work
“I’m taking that seriously. Is it a note on the work, or something else?”
It treats the comment as if it might be useful, which makes it hard to repeat. You stay calm, and they have to decide whether to stand behind it.
What is happening
Something landed that was almost a joke. Challenge it and you are oversensitive. Let it go and it happens again next week, slightly worse.
Say it lightly and once. The question does the work, so there is no need to add an edge.
If they push back
They may laugh it off. They might say:
“Relax, it was a joke.”
Let it go gracefully, and leave the door open:
“Fair enough. If there’s something about the work, I’d rather hear it straight.”
The part this page cannot settle
There are two other ways to say this, one softer and one firmer. Which one fits depends on who said it, who heard it, and whether it is the first time. Choosing well is most of the work.
The Complete Lines has all three for this moment and for every other one, sorted by what is happening to you. If you have a meeting about it coming up, the first page helps you work out what to say before you walk in, and it is free.
